Casco Bay High School in Portland Maine is an
expeditionary school that encourages its students to serve society. In April of
2010, the junior class traveled to West Virginia to participate in something
called the Junior Journey -- a weeklong volunteer project in partnership with
Habitat for Humanity. They worked with the Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity
Volunteer Center in Franklin, West Virginia, assisting in building a home for a
local family.
The students not only had a chance to literally dig in to
a worthy service project but also went beyond comfort zones by traveling to a
different climate of the United States (both culturally and physically!) and
bunking together in close quarters with their peers.
There was an option for students to participate in a
Portland based Habitat for Humanity project as well.
