As the song goes, I was strolling through the park one day,
in the merry month of May, (or maybe it was June) visiting the Portland, Maine
Farmer’s Market. As I gathered my
weekly greens and leeks, I came upon a young lady selling her art. A display of
earrings caught my eye – half-dollar-sized discs with pairs of chickadees,
downy woodpeckers, goldfinches and others. Her depictions reminded me of
Beatrix Potter’s work -- real-looking and yet like storybook illustrations at
the same time. I had to have the goldfinches and put them on immediately (of
course, I bought them first!) and went on to receive numerous compliments on
them whenever I wore them. Later I felt inspired to give the goldfinches to a
healer that my husband and I visited. Another Saturday I went back and got the
downy woodpeckers.
